Codes To Hack Mtn Airtime In South Africa

17-year-old US hacker Jacob Ajit has figured out how to get free mobile data on his smartphone, following a speed test he ran from a SIM with no service.

Ajit told Motherboardhe was “playing around” with a T-Mobile SIM with no service, and discovered he could connect to the operator’s network.

When he went online, he was directed to a portal asking him to renew the prepaid SIM – but Ajit was still able to run his Internet speed test app.

He figured out that he was able to access media sent from any folder named “speedtest” – due to the possible whitelisting of media files from speed test services.

Ajit set up a speedtest folder on his website and filled it with media, then accessed the media with his no service-SIM.

“Ajit then created a proxy server that allows users to access any site with this method. All a T-Mobile user has to do is go to this page and input any URL they want to visit,” stated the report.

T-Mobile did not respond to Motherboard’s request for comment.

More on smartphones

South Africans have multiple options available when it comes to their smartphone account administration, but few are as powerful as simple USSD codes.

Local mobile operators have their own dedicated applications, but in many cases these do not offer the range of features accessible by simply typing in a sequence of numbers and symbols and pressing the call button.

Of course, the biggest problem with USSD codes is that you have to remember what all of these codes are used for.

This is not usually an issue when simply checking airtime balances, as codes like *100# and *188# are easy enough to remember, but many might have trouble recalling the code to send airtime to another number.

Dedicated mobile apps can alleviate some of these difficulties, but USSD codes remain an integral part of the mobile consumer experience in South Africa.

We have listed some of the most useful USSD codes for each mobile operator in South Africa below.
